Chemistry for Biologists: Metabolism and energy
So first I would like to explain some of the terms in the problem, and that will help us figure out the answer. There are two types of metabolic reactions in cells; anabolism and catabolism. Anabolism is when cells "build up" or make bigger molecules out of a bunch of smaller ones. Catabolism is breaking down of the bigger molecules into smaller ones, basically they are opposites of each other.
Anabolic reactions require energy to build up these molecules. It takes a great amount of energy to build molecules, but you actually produce energy when you break the molecules back down catabolic reactions. This is the amount of free energy in a system that is available to work. Now, the difference between exergonic and endergonic.
Exergonic means that you have released energy. When you break down bonds and molecules, such as with catabolic reactions, you release a lot of energy. Usually these type of reactions are spontaneous. Endergonic means that you have to use energy to get the final product. You have to put in a lot of energy to build up molecules, such as with anabolic reactions.
So, anabolic reactions are endergonic because molecule require a lot of energy to be built into something else. Think of building a building. It takes a lot of energy to put all of the building materials together into the finished product. You have to think of this as what you start with has more energy than what you end with. In a catabolic reaction, you release energy back out, so your molecule has lost energy, or released it. This is because you take the molecule you start with, add more molecules and energy, and end up with something that has a ton more energy that you first started with.
I hope that makes more sense, and please feel free to ask questions if something still needs explained. Also, please let me know if you need help with anything else! Good luck in bio!
