Emails don't work really well in Malaysia. There are phamacy chains here. I'm in a bit of a rush so I'll just give you some of the names -. Guardian and Watsons is part of chain, a bit like Boots in the UK. Which area will u be staying? If you do decide to go to a pharmacy chain, Its best for you to call the store closest to where you'll be staying to make arrangements. Also, not all drugs available in the UK are available in Malaysia.
So its really best you check. Cheers for this information. We hope to be staying at Traders hotel on the strength of the reviews on this site! I assume there are pharmacies nearby as it's very central I believe? Most people in Malaysia do not buy their drugs from Pharmacy, other than some simple 'over the counter' drugs.
Having said that, a lot of the bigger pharmacies especially the chain ones do stock most drugs. Beware that they might not have the exact drugs as you use in the UK. For example, Paracetamol generic in the UK is more commonly known in Malaysia as its brand name Panadol.
Some drugs are cheaper in Malaysia if the are manufactured locally, but some are rather expensive if they are imported. Depends on what drugs your are on, it might be easier to persuade your GP in the UK to give you a larger supply before setting off. If you are having trouble buying the drugs from the pharmacy, you could always go to any clinic equivalent of GP surgery to get a consultation. Typically, the cost for registration and consultation is around RM 30 to The hotel should be able to advise as well.
Thank you for your message Dr ET. I have to restock as I take insulin and it de natures after 28 days. I have contacted the pharma company who makes them and they have assured me that the type I use is available and in the same format. I will however take a prescription containing the generic name - great idea! Moreover, I'm contacting pharmacies before I go giving an approx time of arrival to ensure that they can get it and have it for when I get there.
I thought Insulin should last for a long time if left in the fridge. You could put them in a smaller chiller bag with ice pack to take them onboard check with your airline first esp the secutiry issues etc.
Once onboard, you could request the cabin crew to store them in their fridge in the galley again, check with your airline. The other thing I could suggest is to check with Diabetic UK or any other diabetic support group that you know if they have any good suggestion. Many diabetics travel frequently with Insulin.
I am sure there is some sort of advice somewhere. No matter how mush you decide to take with with from UK, always have a letter from your GP with you, just in case. Insulin in Malaysia is quite expensive as they are mostly imported.
I think a month's supply is around RM to Again, check with your hotel if they could help you. Hope you have fun in Malaysia. This topic has been closed to new posts due to inactivity.
