Monday to Friday from 6: PM covers a broad spectrum of issues relevant to all sections of Australia's geographically and culturally diverse community. Samantha Donovan reported this story on Friday, April 26, So just how dangerous are peptides? One of the world's leading experts in growth hormones is professor Michael Waters. He's based at the University of Queensland. He's told PM that although he would urge caution in the use of peptides, there's virtually no evidence linking the use of these peptides with cancer.
These are peptides which originally designed to stimulate growth hormone secretion, to be used as a substitute if you like for growth hormone administration. What is the link if any between these peptides and cancer? Some cancers do produce these peptides, particularly the CJC If you put an end blocker, an antagonist of this peptide into those cells growing in culture, you can slow the growth of the tumour down.
However, nobody's shown that giving injections of this stuff promotes cancer. There's no evidence to suggest it at all that you've been able to find? I've done a pretty comprehensive search. It's possibly that there may be something which is currently studied, but there is nothing in the literature. In looking at that though, is there a difference between peptides causing cancer and peptides accelerating an existing condition?
Look I can't be categoric. All I can go from is the evidence that there isn't anything published. I can't say for sure that the CJC wouldn't promote cancer, certain sorts of cancers, non Hodgkin's lymphoma, but there is nothing published.
What's the status of these substances around the world in terms of whether they're regarded as being safe for human use? There's a lot of interest in the CJC in particular because it's been associated with improved cognition.
So you can actually make people smarter with this, particularly older people. It's also reducing fat by about 7 per cent and so central obesity is reduced, and it's also indicated to improve repair of micro damage in muscles and potentially cartilage so it has a lot of beneficial actions.
Is it approved for human use though? What about GHRP-6 is that approved for use around the world? That has been used, yes. It's actually derived from an opiate type of, an endorphin type of peptide. It's a different mode of action. It operates on a receptor that controls appetite as well as growth hormone secretion. So it's an important metabolic regulator. So again, it will have affects on metabolism which could be beneficial.
If someone had had cancer, would you say they'd be well advised to stay away from these peptides? It may be okay for a shorter period of time but I don't think you'd want to be taking it chronically. And is that just because so little is known about their effect? Because as I said to you, there are these studies, particularly from this fellow Shelly phonetic , he's a very famous American guy, that the CJC can, or the antagonist to it, can slow the growth of cancer cells.
So that's the reason I'm being cautious, because of those kinds of studies but particularly coming from him. PM Monday to Friday from 6: Search AM The full story No link between peptides and cancer: Related Links ABC takes no responsibility for the sites these links take you to.
